Politics will not disturb Parliament — Suleman

Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman says he will not allow politics to disturb the work of the August House and the role of Parliamentary Committees.

He said this in Lilongwe during the official opening of a two-day orientation for members of parliament (MPs) on Parliamentary Committees for the 2025-2030 term.

Suleman said he expects the Committees to be the vibrant engines of transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.

He further observed that citizens’ voices are amplified through hearings, petitions, and inquiries by parliamentary committees. He therefore said his office expects regular reports from those who will be elected Parliamentary Committee Chairpersons.

“Committees transform parliament from a debating chamber into a functioning system of checks and balances, ensuring that power is exercised responsibly and transparently,” said Suleman.

UNDP Deputy Country Representative, Chika-Charles Anikwe, has since pledged continued support to the Parliament of Malawi to strengthen democratic governance, accountability, and institutional capacity.

The orientation is themed ‘From Election to Action: Empowering Parliamentarians for Impactful Legislation, Governance and Transformative Leadership’.
