ESCOM hands over houses to MOMA project-affected households

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) on Tuesday handed over seven houses to households affected by construction activities related to the Mozambique-Malawi Interconnection Project (MOMA) in Mwanza District.

The handover ceremony took place at Kagonamwake Village, under the jurisdiction of Traditional Authority Ntchache.

The initiative is part of the Resettlement Action Plan for MOMA, under which ESCOM has constructed a total of 47 houses for affected households.

The MOMA project aims to enable Malawi to access an initial 50 megawatts of electricity from Mozambique, enhancing grid stability and ensuring a reliable and stable electricity supply.

ESCOM’s Chief Public Relations Officer,  Pilirani Phiri, said the provision of the houses demonstrates ESCOM’s commitment to mitigating the impact of infrastructure development on local communities.

“We are making sure that affected households are adequately resettled,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Annie Thomas, expressed joy over her new settlement, describing it as durable and long-lasting.

The MOMA project is scheduled to be commissioned later this year, marking a significant milestone in regional energy integration and cooperation.

With ESCOM’s efforts to support affected communities, the project is poised to bring benefits to Malawi that include improved electricity supply and enhanced economic growth.
