EGENCO unveils rainy season preparedness plan

The Electricity Generation Company of Malawi (EGENCO) has unveiled its preparedness plan for the anticipated La Niña-induced rainy season.

Speaking in Salima, EGENCO’s Chief Executive Officer, Maxon Chitawo, assured the nation of uninterrupted power supply despite expected challenges.

Chitawo highlighted the importance of the plan in addressing potential risks posed by above-normal rainfall, as forecasted by the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS).

“We anticipate more water from the Shire River catchment area, which could impact our power stations. To mitigate this, we have developed a comprehensive plan to ensure continuous power generation and supply to the nation,” said Chitawo.

He emphasised the collaborative approach taken by EGENCO, working closely with stakeholders such as the DCCMS, Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited (ESCOM), Malawi Police Service, and the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA).

“Together, we can achieve more. Our joint efforts aim to address any disruptions promptly and maintain power supply throughout the season,” Chitawo added.

Addressing concerns about potential power outages, Chitawo noted that EGENCO had diversified its energy sources.

“By February 2025, we expect to add between 35 to 40 megawatts to the grid. This includes repairs to existing facilities and the introduction of solar projects in Salima,” he disclosed.

Chitawo reflected on EGENCO’s achievements in 2024, describing the year as successful.

He highlighted the smooth operations of power stations and collaboration with ESCOM, as well as ongoing projects such as the Salima solar power plant and rehabilitation works at Nkula B and Kapichira.

The Director of DCCMS, Lucy Mtilatila, commended EGENCO’s proactive measures.

We are expecting above-normal rainfall

“Hydropower generation is climate-sensitive, and extreme weather events are becoming more frequent. It’s crucial to stay ahead and prepare for such events,” said Mtilatila.

She also warned of heightened flooding risks due to above-normal rainfall expected between January and March 2025.

As Malawi braces for a challenging rainy season, EGENCO’s preparedness plan is expected to play a key role in ensuring power stability while addressing the risks associated with extreme weather events.
