Chakwera urges UN for more support, hails cordial working relationship

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has acknowledged the strong partnership that exists between Malawi and the United Nations (UN) in different areas of development.

President Chakwera made the remarks on Saturday, during a meeting with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York.

He stated that his administration places great importance on the collaboration with the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Malawi and various UN agencies operating in the country.

‘’Our partnership with the UN spans crucial sectors, including education, health, climate change, poverty eradication, agriculture, and good governance,” Chakwera said.

President Chakwera commended the UN for being a steadfast partner in providing unwavering support through Malawi’s challenging and prosperous times.

He also appealed for Malawi’s additional support in three crucial areas such as elections, social cash transfer for those affected by hunger due to climate change and support for victims of the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy through the rehabilitation of infrastructure such as schools, hospitals and facilitate the construction of affordable houses.

Dr Chakwera applauded the UN for its efforts and dedication in promoting dialogue among the warring factions to seek peaceful resolutions to their disputes.

The President then hailed UN Malawi for the establishment of the UN Technology Bank for Least Development Countries and recognised its potential to bridge the technological gap and contribute to sustainable development, particularly in developing African countries.
