The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has stressed that the academia has a vital role to play in supporting the electoral process through, among others, research and analysis on electoral system.
MEC Chairperson Chifundo Kachale was speaking at the Mzuzu University (MZUNI) where he delivered a lecture titled ‘Democracy, Law Reform andb2025 General Elections’.
“Academicians play a crucial role in capacity building by proving training,” said Kachale.
He then gave an outline of some of the activities to be undertaken by the commission, which includes mass awareness around electoral law and accreditation of organizations.
He added that voter registration for the September 2025 General Elections will run from September to December this year.
Kachale said presidential candidates as well as aspiring members of Parliament will collect their nomination papers in June 2025 and that announcement of election results will be in the period between 17 and 24 September 2025.
