Speaker of Parliament, Sameer Suleman, has called on the Budget and Finance Committee and other parliamentary committees to closely track the implementation of the 2026/27 National Budget to ensure it benefits Malawians.
Suleman made the remarks in Lilongwe during the opening of a dialogue on budget implementation, tracking and oversight.
The dialogue was organised by the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) and the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA).
He emphasised that the role of Members of Parliament goes beyond passing the budget, stressing the need for strong oversight to ensure public funds deliver tangible results for citizens.
Suleman also noted that Malawi continues to face challenges in budget execution, including procurement delays, weak financial management systems, and poor coordination.
He further challenged parliamentary committees to scrutinise how resources are utilised, ensure spending aligns with approved priorities, and act on audit findings to strengthen accountability.
AFIDEP Executive Director, Eliya Zulu, observed that Malawi is operating in an increasingly constrained resource environment, making effective budget tracking critical.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Budget and Finance Committee, Sosten Gwengwe, said there is a need for the Malawi Revenue Authority to submit quarterly revenue reports to Parliament, while the Auditor General should regularly report any suspected cases of financial mismanagement.
