National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) says it has started disbursing funds from the Youth Innovation Fund, with two youth innovators from Mchinji benefiting over K24 million.
This comes as NYCOM had received applications from young innovators who are ready to break new ground in the areas of agriculture, tourism, mining and manufacturing, and the Malawi Government committed K2 billion for the cause.
NYCOM Executive Director, Rex Chapota, said they want to target thousands of youths who have unique innovations.
“In this first cohort of tier two and tier three, we are giving innovations to 85 youths and we are contributing to around K1 billion,” Chapota said.
Mchinji Director of Planning and Development (DPD), Martin Pindankono, said he was thankful to NYCOM for the funds to the youths of Mchinji and urged them to be an example to others.
The two innovators are Aubrey Chidziwitsano, who has an automated mobile solar irrigation system which can be rented out to other farmers and can be set to irrigate using a mobile phone, and another one is Elizabeth Teleka, who produces liquid bio-fertiliser and bio-gas.
Teleka, who owns ENZEL Agro-processors, said the K11.9 million she has received will impact her business and her whole community as well.
Chidziwitsano, who runs Kuwala Eco-Energy Initiative, got K12.9 million.
