Local chiefs, subordinates nabbed over chieftaincy wrangles

Police in Lumbadzi have arrested two chiefs and their six subordinates over chieftaincy wrangles in the area of Senior Group Village Headman Chigonthi, which is under Senior Chief Chitukula in Lilongwe.

Lumbadzi Police Station’s publicist, Felix Kwinyani, says the incident took place on May 31, 2024, at Kalambulika village in the area of Senior Chief Chitukula and they have since been charged with offences ranging from malicious damage, arson and theft.

Kwinyani says the suspects appeared in court and were remanded to Maula Prison, pending further hearing and further investigation to arrest additional suspects and recover stolen property.

The two chiefs and their subordinates have been identified as Abeyele Mwase (Senior Group Village Headman Chigonthi), Phinifolo Batiyele (Village Headman Nkhosa), James Batiyere, Green Michael, Zembeni Patson, Naman Nelson, Kaluzi Dickson and Elisa Chirwa all from group village headman Chigonthi.
