A search and rescue mission is underway to locate a plane that was carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima, which failed to make its scheduled landing at Mzuzu Airport.
A statement signed by the Secretary to the President and Cabinet Colleen Zamba says the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) plane, on which Chilima was on board, left Lilongwe at 9:17am and was supposed to touch down at Mzuzu Airport at 10:02 am but went off radar and MDF and aviation personnel have failed to make contact with the missing aircraft.
Reports indicate that the VP was supposed to connect from Mzuzu to Nkhata Bay to attend the burial of renowned lawyer Raphael Kasambara.
According to Zamba, President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has since cancelled his planned departure for Bahamas and ordered all national agencies to embark on the search mission.
