Political commentators have described the absence of UTM president Dalitso Kabambe and other officials at the launch of the Saulos Klaus Chilima (SKC) Foundation as a missed opportunity to honour the late Dr Chilima.
According to reports, UTM’s decision not to attend the event was deliberate as Kabambe said the party could not reconcile with individuals they believe need to provide answers about Chilima’s death.
Political analyst, Chimwemwe Tsitsi, emphasised that UTM must look beyond politics.
“Although UTM’s beliefs and stance on the cause of the plane crash differ, they needed to demonstrate political maturity,” Tsitsi suggested.
Another political commentator, Moses Mkandawire, emphasised that late Dr. Chilima was a peaceful leader who promoted co-existence.
“Despite our differences, the fact remains that Dr Chilima was the Vice President of Malawi and founder of UTM. Therefore, it was imperative for both government and UTM officials to attend,” Mkandawire said.
The SKC Foundation was launched at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe on Wednesday, with President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and First Lady Monica Chakwera in attendance, among other dignitaries.
It aims to advance the values and principles Chilima stood for, including youth empowerment, education, healthcare and entrepreneurship.
