President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has commended the Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) for its key role in disaster response, food security, water and sanitation (WASH), and emergency first aid across Malawi.
Speaking at Kamuzu Palace during the launch of the 2026 Red Cross Flag Week, the President praised volunteers for their selfless service and urged Malawians to support humanitarian work through donations.
He paid tribute to Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers, describing them as dedicated individuals who bring hope to people in crisis, often at great personal risk.
He said their work reflects the true spirit of humanity and national unity.
The President emphasised that humanitarian response is increasingly important amid rising global challenges and natural disasters, calling for collective responsibility to protect and support frontline responders.
MRCS President Innocent Majiya thanked government for reinstating financial support in 2018 after a 20-year break, calling it a “lifeline” that has strengthened operations.
He also welcomed government co-funding for a new Disaster Response Operations Centre, which is nearing completion and expected to improve emergency response capacity nationwide.
