Malawi Police Service has called on security agencies in the country to include women in decision making roles in order to create inclusive, equitable and effective institutions.
Inspector General of the Police, Merlyn Yolamu, made these remarks at a workshop for female security officers which is being supported by the European Union under the Chilungamo II programme in Lilongwe.
UN Women Country Representative, Letty Chiwara, said it is crucial for women working in security agencies to be put at the centre of policy formulation.
Chiwara said this will help the departments make informed decisions on issues affecting women and girls in the country.
Executive Secretary for the Malawi Human Rights Commission, Habiba Osman, pledged the commission’s commitment to ensuring women working in the security institutions are well protected, treated with dignity and with respect.
The workshop has brought together officers from the Malawi Police Service, Malawi Defense Force, Malawi Prison Service and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services.
