The chairperson of the Rumphi Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) network, Jai Kanyondo, has expressed concern over the lack of representation of women and youth among councilors and parliamentarians in the district.
Kanyondo made the remarks on Saturday during a Women Legal Resources Centre (Wolrec) consultative meeting with political parties and other stakeholders to empower women, youths and people with disabilities to run for councillorship and parliamentary offices in 2025.
He further urged political parties that attended the meeting to find ways of promoting these groups to create a conducive environment that would allow them to compete effectively.
Malawi Congress Party Constituency Secretary, Oswald Jere said women, youths and people with disabilities have been marginalized for a long time and there is a need to give them a chance.
“As a party at the constituency level I will be meeting the youths, women and people to encourage them to compete for various positions during the 2025 elections,” said Jere.
Democratic Progressive Party District Chairperson, Miriam Gondwe, echoed these sentiments, stating that her party would convene to strategize on how best to promote the interests of women, youth, and people with disabilities.
