Local teacher gets international recognition

Primary school teacher, Tionge Mtambo, has been listed as one of the top 50 finalists in the Global Teacher Prize for 2025.

Mtambo, who is a Headteacher at Tondola Primary School in Chitipa, told MBC Digital that the recognition is not only for herself, but it is a win for all the dedicated teachers in Malawi. She added that this also reflects the resilience and determination of Malawian educators.

She said the recognition fuels her passion to keep striving for excellence in the lives of children, especially the most vulnerable.

She further said that being the only Malawian teacher on the list highlights the potential of young female educators in the country and underscores their ability to make significant contributions to the education sector both locally and globally.

In addition to her teaching role, Mtambo has been an advocate for girls’ education in her community, transforming her home into a makeshift boarding facility to support girls in focusing on their studies.

According to Sunny Varkey, Founder of Global Teacher Prize, the competition aims at highlighting the critical role of education and also appreciate the transformative impact that teachers have on the lives of young people worldwide.

Winner of this year’s competition will get a grand prize of $1 million (approx. K1.78 billion).
