Illegal mining threatens Zomba’s resources

Illegal miners are allegedly extracting alluvial gold in parts of Thondwe and Zaone in Zomba.

Prompted by these findings,  Minister of Mining Monica Chayang’anamuno convened an impromptu meeting with stakeholders in Zomba City.

It was claimed at the meeting that the foreign miners have allegedly been transmitting strange sexually transmitted diseases.

Chayang’anamuno called on Malawians to be vigilant in safeguarding the nation’s natural resources.

The Minister noted that most Malawians are being tricked into mining without knowing the proper procedures.

The meeting brought together  various stakeholders in the  district including police officers, education and health officials as well as business persons.
