First Lady calls for increased cleanliness

First Lady Madame Professor Getrude Mutharika has called on citizens in the country to uphold a high level of cleanliness and participate in efforts to maintain a healthy environment.

The First Lady made the call at Goliati in Thyolo District on Saturday, when she presided over the distribution of assorted relief items to food-insecure households.

Madame Professor Mutharika, who is also the patron of Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust, said cleanliness does not demand fancy things but commitment to use what people have to champion good hygiene.

She said, cleanliness is a crucial element in preventing infectious diseases, stressing that the organisation will do its best to promote hygiene in schools, hospitals and markets.

She then commended the Muslim World League for joining forces with BEAM in bailing out food-insecure households.

The First Lady has also committed to working with other stakeholders in the provision of potable water by drilling water boreholes in designated places, as well as the construction of a girls’ hostel at Matapwata Secondary School in the area.

National Coordinator for Muslim World League, Sheikh Twaibu Mustapha, hailed the First Lady for spearheading interventions that seek to improve people’s welfare in the country.

During the event, Madame Professor Mutharika distributed food packs containing assorted items such as maize flour, salt, blankets and monetary support to 750 households.

Official records indicate that about 78,000 households in Thyolo are at risk of facing hunger.
