Malawi Coalition for Kabaza Stakeholders and Association (MACOCASA) has engaged the government through relevant departments to help in mass registration of motorcycles.
MACOCASA National Chairperson, Moses Mwalabu, made the engagement in Mzuzu during a stakeholders meeting with owners of motorcycles drawn from Mzuzu.
“We have over 2 million motorcycles and 90% of them are not registered, posing a threat to life and property,” Mwalabu said.
Mzuzu Police Station Officer, Christopher Chimatiro, commended MACOCASA for the initiative, describing it as key in reducing road accidents through crashes as all operators will have to hone road safety skills.
Executive Director for Road Safety Alert Foundation, Joel Jere, said registering motorcycles will help in identifying owners of motorcycles and providing insurance cover.
According to police reports from January to June this year, 2,024 accidents were recorded, with 485 of them involving motorcyclists.
