Government says the new national social protection policy will help foster the inclusiveness of persons with disabilities.
Ben M’bwana, Director of Administration in the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare made the remarks during the opening of the Disability Rights Fund (DRF) technical assistance gathering meant to enhance inclusive social protection in Malawi, which is taking place in Salima.
The meeting has been convened by the Spinal Injuries Association of Malawi (SIAM) with support from DRF.
George Chiusiwa, Executive Director of the Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA), stressed that social protection is a right and that persons with disabilities should be protected.
Federation of Disability Organisations in Malawi (FEDOMA) Executive Director Simon Munde commended the government for the new policy, adding that they will continue to monitor implementation to ensure that it benefits the marginalised, including persons with disabilities.
Regional Director for Disability Rights Fund for Malawi and Zambia, Katiya Sakala, urged participants to address issues that infringe on the rights of persons with disabilities in Malawi.
