The Indian Muslim community in Malawi, in partnership with ZMK Medical Centre in Lilongwe, organised a blood donation camp to mark India’s 80th Independence anniversary.
Speaking at the event, Chairperson of the Indian Muslim community, Imtiazbeg Mirza, said they chose to celebrate the anniversary in this way to help address the shortage of blood in hospitals across the country.
Head of the Central Region Blood Bank, Joseph Simwela, commended the Indian Muslim community in Malawi for the initiative and called on all eligible Malawians to donate blood to address shortages, particularly during lean periods when schools are closed.
Simwela said the blood bank requires 46,000 pints of blood annually to supply various hospitals in the Central Region.
He, therefore, urged all eligible Malawians to develop a culture of blood donation to help meet the demand.
