Heaps of garbage at Dedza Market spark health concerns

Traders plying business at Dedza main market have expressed concerned over poor sanitation at the market.

Concerned trader, Peter Misomali, said the market has stayed a month wothout having the garbage collected.

“We fear that the heaps of garbage could trigger the outbreak of waterborne diseases,” he stressed.

Andrew Bunya, a Waste collector given a contract by the Dedza District Council, said he is failing to remove the waste on time due to delays in his payments from the council.

Bunya said: “I am failing to pay my labourers, despite engaging the council. What else can I do?” he said.

Health rights activist Maziko Matemba has since called on authorities to act promptly, warning that people’s lives are at risk.

Dedza District Council’s Director of Administration, Dr Chris Salaniponi, acknowledged the problem and said they are trying to rectify it.
