The Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare is set to launch the 2024-2030 National Strategy for the Political Empowerment of Women, with the aim of increasing women’s representation in Parliament and local councils to 35 percent in the 2025 elections and 50 percent by 2030.
The launch will take place in Dedza on Tuesday, 13 August.
Jean Sendeza, the Minister of Gender, said that the strategy will promote the successful participation of women, youth, and people with disabilities in the upcoming general election.
Oxfam’s Country Director, Lingalireni Mihowa, expressed optimism about the strategy. She noted that, once implemented, it would guide political parties to adopt gender-transformative practices in various political roles.
