The Ministry of Agriculture in partnership with the Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI), is convening a three-day multi-stakeholder meeting in Salima District to address critical issues in landscape management and agricultural productivity.
The meeting brings together key players to discuss strategies for managing vital resources, including forestry, water bodies, and biodiversity. The focus is on enhancing agricultural productivity while tackling pressing challenges such as land degradation, pollution, climate change, and pest and disease outbreaks in Malawi.
Geoffrey Mamba, Principal Secretary for Irrigation in the Ministry of Agriculture, emphasized that the discussions are a proactive step towards mitigating adverse weather conditions like El Niño, as well as combating recurring threats such as Army Worm infestations, which have plagued the nation in recent agricultural seasons.
He noted that effective landscape management is essential for ensuring food security, clean water, and reduced carbon emissions.
Hariet Hinz, Global Director for Invasive Species at CABI, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Malawi’s environmental and agricultural reforms.
CABI is actively involved in several key projects in the country, including the PlantwisePlus initiative and the Malawi Digital Plant Health Service (MaDiPHS), all aimed at strengthening the nation’s agricultural resilience.
This collaborative effort underscores the importance of integrated landscape management in securing Malawi’s environmental and agricultural future.
