Gambian Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Pierre Gomez visited the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) to gather insights for developing two centres of excellence in agribusiness and aquaculture in Gambia, as recommended by the World Bank.
Speaking during a meeting with LUANAR’s management in Lilongwe, Gomez emphasised the significance of this initiative for his country’s educational and research development.
Vice Chancellor of LUANAR, Professor Emmanuel Kaunda, said the visit shows the relationship that is growing between Malawi and Gambia.
Kaunda said LUANAR is the only centre of excellence out of 48 centres of excellence in Africa, which the World Bank has supported and identified as a centre of excellence in Aquaculture and Fisheries.
LUANAR currently trains over 15 students from Gambia in aquaculture and fisheries and hosts students from other nations such as Angola, Lesotho, Mozambique, and Ghana, showcasing its diverse and impactful educational programs.
