FOCUS gears on youth empowerment

Foundation for Community Support Services (FOCUS) has embarked on an initiative to equip young people with vocational, entrepreneurship as well as business management skills.

One of the organisation’s officers, Enala Ngulu, says this is a drive to promote self-reliance among young people in the country.

FOCUS is implementing the ‘Child not Bride Project’ with funding from Norwegian State Broadcast through Plan International Malawi to contribute towards the reduction of child marriages and teen pregnancies and increase girls’ education attainment.

Atleast 26 youths have already been trained in phone repairing, tailoring and hairdressing.

“The skills are going to assist the youth with an opportunity to create jobs for themselves and employ others,” Ngulu stressed.

Next month, FOCUS is expected to enrol more youths in brick layering, mechanics, plumbing and welding.
