Cotton Council of Malawi has come up with a structured market for cotton in the country, with an initial production target of 50,000 metric tonnes in the 2024/2025 growing season.
Making the announcement in Blantyre, Chief Executive Officer for Cotton Council of Malawi, Cosmas Luwanda, who was in the company of other stakeholders, said the new arrangement will ensure that cotton farmers access inputs using zero deposit arrangement and that all payments will be channelled through banks, among other strategies.
He described cotton as a crop with vast potential that can help boost the country’s economy..
President of the Cotton Farmers Association, Snowden Mbalafana, said the setting up of a structured market is a welcome development, adding that farmers are ready and excited.
In the new cotton production value chain structure, ADMARC will be offering its premises as main aggregation centres.
