Consider Art as a Business — Chomanika

Deputy Minister of Local Government Owen Chomanika has challenged women under the Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM) to seriously consider their art as a business and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

Chomanika said that art contributes 3.4 percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product, making it one of the critical industries driving economic growth towards the realisation of Malawi 2063.

He made the remarks in Lilongwe during the 2024 Creative Summit of MUM’s Women Chapter, themed “Promoting Arts as a Business”.

The event included a training session organised by the School of Creative Arts, funded by the Copyright Fund with support from the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority and NICO Group. The training aimed to help artists refine and promote their work.

Chairperson for MUM Women’s Chapter, Mebo Rwanda, described the initiative as a sign of women’s empowerment and a milestone in the creative industry.

Rwanda has since urged artists to fully utilise the training to make impactful contributions to the nation and foster personal development.
