MEC registers over 2.5 million people in phase 3 of voter registration exercise

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says 2,515,315 people were registered during the recently concluded Phase 3 of the voter registration exercise.

The third phase, which ran from 28 November to 11 December, covered eight districts: M’mbelwa District Council, Lilongwe City, Lilongwe Rural, Mangochi District, Mangochi Municipality, Mwanza, Chikwawa, and Nsanje.

According to a statement signed by MEC’s Chief Elections Officer, Andrew Mpesi, this figure represents 70 percent of the projected population.

In Phase 1, MEC registered 2,224,307 people, while Phase 2 recorded 2,422,595 registrants. Combined with Phase 3, the total number of registered voters across all phases stands at 7,162,217.

MEC has clarified that these figures are preliminary and subject to change.

The Commission has urged stakeholders to exercise caution when using the data until the final voters’ register is completed.
