Malawi, Morocco strengthen bilateral relations with fertiliser agreement

The Republic of Malawi and the Kingdom of Morocco have taken a significant step towards strengthening their bilateral relations with the signing of a Government-to-Government (G2G) agreement on fertiliser supply.

The signing ceremony, held on 16 January 2025 in Rabat, saw Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nancy Tembo and her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, endorse the deal.

“This agreement underscores the growing bonds of friendship and cooperation between Malawi and Morocco,” said Tembo.

“It is a crucial step towards addressing Malawi’s acute fertiliser shortage and ensuring food security for our nation,” added Tembo.

The agreement focuses on an urgent commercial supply of fertiliser by OCP Africa, a leading Moroccan fertiliser company, to Malawi. The supply will address critical shortages that have hindered agricultural productivity. It also includes plans for establishing a fertiliser blending plant in Malawi, aimed at boosting local production.

“With this partnership, we anticipate improved agricultural outputs, job creation, and economic growth. The establishment of a blending plant will not only stabilise fertiliser supply but also position Malawi as a regional hub for fertiliser production and export,” said Tembo.

In his remarks, Bourita echoed the sentiments, highlighting the importance of South – South cooperation.

“This agreement exemplifies the strength of our bilateral relations and our shared commitment to addressing global challenges like food security,” he said.

The two countries also reaffirmed their commitment to broader cooperation, including agriculture, mining, and education.

“This partnership is transformative and will propel us towards sustainable development,” Tembo concluded.

The agreement is a testament to the deepening ties between Malawi and Morocco, as they continue to work towards mutual growth and prosperity.
