ASUD trains fingerling producers

Action for Sustainable Development (ASUD) has drilled aquaculture farmers in the Northern Region to improve production of quality fingerlings in order to help meet demand and improve quality.

ASUD Executive Director, Thomas Ngwira, said inadequate financing and weak technical capacities remain challenges to those producing fish in the country.

Ngwira said the training is part of a project which seeks to improve hatchery production and management for quality fingerlings.

Mzuzu Aquaculture Centre, David Mbamba, who trained the fingerling producers said insufficient quality and quantity of fingerlings remains a setback in fish production.

However, Mbamba was quick to highlight that with the training and support from GIZ the country is expected to have quality fingerlings thereby boosting aquaculture.

One of the trainees, John Gondwe from Nkhatabay said they have been trained in fish breeding, rearing and conditioning.

Malawi harvests 10,000 metric tons of fish annually but with different interventions it is projecting to rise by 30, 000 tons by 2030.
