Malawi Network of Older Persons Organizations (MANEPO) has described the continued harassment of elderly people in the country as worrisome.
Its Country Director, Andrew Kavala, has made the comments after a video clip made rounds on social media where 49-year-old Daniel Mpinda is seen beating an elderly woman, accusing her of being behind the death of a primary school learner who died mysteriously.
The incident took place in Delule Village under Traditional Authority Bvumbwe in Thyolo and Police in Limbe have since arrested Mpinda.
Kavala has strongly condemned the barbaric act, calling for the respect of the dignity of older persons.
Concurring with Kavala, Victor Mhango of Centre for Human Rights, Education Advice and Assistance blamed communities for allowing the elderly to be harassed on their watch.
According to MANEPO, 21 older persons have been killed from January this year while over 70 have been tortured on witchcraft allegations.
