Journalists from Balaka have applauded a recent refresher training on disaster reporting, saying it has equipped them with vital skills ahead of the rainy season.
The three-day training, held in Ntcheu, was organised by the District Council of Balaka through its Disaster Risk Management Department.
The training focused on the importance of correct and timely reporting and the role journalists play in educating the public, raising awareness and supporting disaster response efforts.
Disaster Risk Management Officer (DRMO) for Balaka, Alick Milanzie, said the training came at the right time as Malawi heads into a season where disasters such as floods are more likely.
“As we approach the rainy season, it’s important for the media to be trained on how to report disaster issues accurately and responsibly. Journalists are a sharp tool in disaster risk management and must be involved in all stages; preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery,” Milanzie said.
Milanzie emphasised that working closely with the media helps communities understand risks and take early action, which contributes to national development.
Journalists from Balaka District who attended the training described it as timely and essential to their work.
The training also encouraged stronger collaboration between the media and disaster management stakeholders to ensure accurate information reaches the public during emergencies.
