Social Media misinformation worries government

Government has condemned the continuous abuse of social media by spreading misinformation and disinformation aimed at injuring innocent people and institutions.

This comes after a recent fake post by a fake Malawi News Agency page went viral that the Government is unhappy with Catholic Bishops for apparently not participating in the Independence Anniversary National Service of Worship that was held on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at BICC in Lilongwe.

Government Spokesperson and Minister of Information, Moses Kunkuyu, expressed dismay with this since the Catholic Church in Malawi fully participated in the National Service through the President of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi, His Grace Archbishop George Tambala and the St. Patrick’s Catholic Parish Choir 1.

Kunkuyu stated that the public has the right to safeguard individuals and institutions from deliberate and malicious attacks perpetrated through false social media posts, emphasising that such actions are unacceptable, illegal, and punishable under Malawian law
