Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) says it has spent K2.4 billion to support 11,000 households with cash transfers to cushion them from El Nino-induced hunger.
MRCS General Secretary, Chifundo Kalulu, made the disclosure in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mabilawo in Mzimba District during the final cash distribution after three months of providing cash transfers to households affected by hunger.
About 7 million Malawians are in need of food support in the country, according to Kalulu, who also urged Non-Governmental Organisations to step in and complement the government’s efforts.
For instance, in T/A Mabilawo’s area, the El Nino-induced weather left communities with little to no food at all, prompting the MRCS to support 1500 households.
Overall, MRCS has spent about K2.4 billion providing K50,000 per month to each of the 11,000 households across various districts to cover basic necessities like food and school fees.
