University students back Ministry of Higher Education formation

Gershom Nyirenda, Malawi Public Universities Students Union president

Malawi Public Universities Students Union says the formation of the Ministry of Higher Education is a testament to the government’s commitment to uplifting higher education in the country.

In a statement signed by the Union’s president, Gershom Nyirenda said the issues to do with higher education needed a specific ministry which could pay full attention to the challenges being faced.

Nyirenda believes the newly formed ministry will address the challenges that public universities face such as accommodation infrastructure development and proper curriculum development.

Nyirenda added that they expect the new ministry to improve accessibility to higher education, address students’ welfare and engage students in the decision-making process.

The reorganised Ministry of Education has been split into the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Ministry of Higher Education.
