Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation Liana Kakhobwe Chapota has called on Malawians to plant trees at all times as a way of mitigating the effects of climate change.
The minister made the remarks during a tree planting exercise organised by the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) in Zomba at one of the board’s water reservoirs, Mulunguzi Dam.
“We encourage companies, organisations and individuals to plant trees in their premises to fully restore the environment,” said the minister.
In his remarks, Board Chairperson for SRWB, Brown Mpinganjira, said the board plans to plant one hundred thousand trees during this year’s tree planting season in their water reservoirs.
The theme for this year’s tree planting exercise is: “Forest Innovation in Action Restoration for a Sustainable Tomorrow.”
