Govt keen to develop 48000 hectares of irrigatable land

The Ministry of Agriculture says it wants to develop about 48000 hectares of irrigatable land across the country.

Minister responsible, Sam Kawale, made the remarks in Mangochi during an inspection tour of rehabilitations works at Mlambe Irrigation scheme.

Kawale said in its 2024 Irrigation Masterplan, the Ministry is focusing on rehabilitation of schemes that had extensive damages, including Mlambe, for communities to practice largescale commercial irrigation farming.

Mlambe Irrigation Scheme, which is one of the schemes under the Mega farms programme through the Greenbelt Authority (GBA), covers a stretch of about 800 hectares of land.

So far, GBA is rehabilitating about 200 hectares.
