Govt calls for collective efforts to end child marriages

Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare has called for collaborative effort in combating child marriages.

She made the call during the 11th Annual General Meeting by Girls Not Brides – Malawi Chapter at Mponela in Dowa District where stakeholders have gathered to find practical solutions to early marriages, particularly among girls.

The two days meeting is being held under theme  “Malawi Invest in Ending Child Marriage Now.”

A research study by the Ministry indicates that the percentage of girls  marrying before the age of 18 stands at 37 percent from 41 percent while the percentage of boys engaged in early marriages is at  7% from  6.2%.

According to Sendeza, it is only through joint effort that the country can move towards zero tolerance of child marriages.
