Girls urged to rise above stereotypes

Minister of Tourism, Vera Kamtukule has encouraged girls in the country to remain in school to become productive citizens.

Kamtukule made the remarks in Liwonde, Machinga during the closing ceremony of a four-day girls’ camp, which attracted girls from Ntcheu and Balaka districts.

The four-day girls’ camp in Machinga was supported by Save the Children through: Abwenzi A Ana and Tikwaniritse Ndi Kuteteza Maufulu a Ana ( TiKuMA) programmes and it’s implementing partners.

UNICEF findings show that Malawi has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world, with approximately 42 percent of girls married before the age of 18.

During the closing ceremony, the girls called on the government to take action to end child marriages.
