The Private Schools Association of Malawi (PRISAM) has commended President Dr Lazarus Chakwera for ordering an immediate review of university students’ upkeep allowances.
Dr Chakwera made the order in consideration of the rising cost of living. During the inauguration of the University Innovation Pod (UNIPOD) at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), he issued a directive to the ministries of education and finance instructing them to collaborate with the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to increase the students’ allowances.
His directive has earned him praise from PRISAM.
Commenting on the development, PRISAM President, Ernest Kaonga, commended Dr Chakwera saying the review will assist many underprivileged students in the institutions of higher learning.
Kaonga said, “We receive many letters from students asking for school fees for both secondary and college studies. We adopted some students but we believe what the Malawi leader has done will help to alleviate financial challenges among these students, hence developing education standards.”
The new PRISAM leadership headed by Kaonga has pledged to maintain quality education standards in all PRISAM-affiliated institutions taking students’ performance and welfare at heart hence supporting all government education efforts in that line.
