Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale says he is happy that some people are also establishing private mega farm initiatives that have embraced mechanisation.
He was speaking at Goshen Farms in Mchinji which has already helped rural communities through job and wealth creation.
The 300-hectare (ha) maize field is run by Goshen Farms Limited of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri.
Kawale acknowledged that apart from fulfilling his ambitions of wealth creation, Bushiri has also touched many lives around Traditional Authority Dambe in Mchinji who are employed on the farm.
Bushiri said it was important to invite the minister of Agriculture to see what Goshen Farms is doing so that the farm gets proper extension service in its endeavor to venture into irrigation soon after the harvest.
“We would like to explore irrigation farming to maximise yield on this land with two or three harvests a year,” said Bushiri.
The Goshen Farm in Mchinji has 700ha of farmland where 300 ha was dry planted with maize before the onset of rains.
Managing Director for Goshen Farms, Kate Kusakala, believes this year their harvest will be in excess of 6000 metric tons.
