Oxfam, ELDS launch El-Niño recuperation project

At least 21,000 people in Chikwawa District can now breathe a sigh of relief following the launch of the Integrated Emergency Response for El Niño-affected communities in Malawi, which were recently impacted by extreme weather conditions.

The project will be jointly implemented by Oxfam Malawi and the Evangelical Lutheran Development Services (ELDS).

Oxfam Country Director, Lingalireni Mihowa, said this in Chikwawa during the launch of the initiative.

She said the response is part of Oxfam’s interventions after President Dr Lazarus Chakwera called for support for people affected by floods and droughts.

Mihowa said the targeted households are being given K140,000 to enable them to access basic needs.

“We also plan to reach out to more people in 2026 when the Government releases the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee report that will highlight the number of affected households,” she disclosed.

Senior Chief Ngabu has since implored the beneficiaries to use the funds for the intended purpose.

One of the beneficiaries of the project, Esnart Kamonjola, pledged to use the money to procure maize.

Global Affairs Canada has funded the project to the tune of about K1.5 Billion.
