United Nations (UN) Women Malawi Country Representative, Letty Chiwara, has pointed out that Gender Based Violence (GBV) continues to be a vice in the country despite efforts to end it.
She made the remarks in Ntchisi on Wednesday, where she commended women for their efforts in empowering their communities under the Spotlight Initiative.
According to Chiwara, 42% of girls in Malawi get married at a young age and one in three women experience GBV, a development which she said hinders progress in the country.
Gender Development Officer in the Ministry of Gender, Stanley Mpinganjira, said the government has put in place measures such as the National Male Engagement Strategy, to involve men in ending the vice in Malawi.
Mpinganjira, however, said despite the fact that cases of GBV continue to happen, the country has made strides in dealing with the malpractice.
