Delegates strategise on small-scale fisheries action plan

High-level delegates, including Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change Michael Usi, are having a dialogue at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe on the National Plan of Action for small-scale fisheries in Malawi.

The discussion has been organised by the Malawi Government, jointly with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

The National Plan of Action for Small-scale Fisheries, among others, provides a framework to ensure their effective contribution to food security and nutrition as well as coordinated implementation of small-scale fishing programmes and activities in the country.

Currently, about 500,000 people  in the country are employed in small-scale fisheries and fishing contributes approximately four percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
