Three dead, property damaged after heavy rains in Neno

Mphinga – Assessments are still ongoing to ascertain the extent of damage

Three people have died and property has been damaged in Neno District following heavy rains and strong winds that began on Tuesday evening.

Neno District Disaster Risk Management Officer, Brighton Mphinga, confirmed that the areas most affected fall under Traditional Authority Symon.

Kenneth Gawaza, 61, from Kasamba Village, and Petro Chakanika from Masita Village drowned in the flooded Lisungwi River, with their bodies recovered six and four kilometers downstream, respectively.

Mphinga further said that 29-year-old Alinafe Eliyasi died at Lisungwi Hospital after being struck by lightning. Four others who were struck by the same lightning have since recovered.

He said several houses have collapsed and roofs blown off due to the storm. According to Mphinga, assessments to determine the full extent of the damage are still ongoing.
