Shop Manager jailed for 11 years over theft, arson

Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Mangochi has sentenced Asif Master, 30, a Malawian resident of Indian origin, to 11 years Imprisonment due to theft and arson.

Master is said to have committed the offences between January and April this year within Mangochi township at Steel World Group where he was working as a Shop Manager.

He stole building materials worth K29 million and set on fire a building which had hardware materials worth K300 million.

In mitigation, the convict opted to stay silent as he pleaded guilty and the State asked for a stiffer penalty.

Master will serve four years for the count of theft by servant and seven years for arson and the sentences will run concurrently.

He hails from Bwewa Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mabuka in Mulanje District.
