Prisam pleads for reopening of Chaminade

Private Schools Association of Malawi (PRISAM) has made an urgent appeal to the Ministry of Education to reconsider the closure of Chaminade Marianist Secondary School, which was closed due to its use of corporal punishment and governance issues.

On Monday, the Ministry, through its spokesperson, Mphatso Nkuonera, announced the school’s closure, citing the illegal use of corporal punishment as the primary reason.

However, PRISAM President, Ernest Kaonga, has pleaded with the Ministry to allow the school to reopen, highlighting the adverse impact on innocent students.

“As PRISAM, we understand all the reasons why the school was closed. Our plea to the Ministry of Education is to invite the school’s administration to a roundtable discussion to chart the way forward. Contact and dialogue are the only viable solutions, particularly as the closure severely affects students preparing for their MSCE and JCE examinations,” said Kaonga.

In response, Nkuonera acknowledged PRISAM’s concerns, stating: “This request is well understood, and the Ministry is already addressing the matter, doing our utmost to expedite the process, conclude, and act accordingly.”
