Iponga Football Club has qualified for the national round of the FDH Bank Cup following a 2-1 victory against rivals Songwe Border United at Karonga Stadium on Sunday.
Songwe were the first to score through Thomson Manyola in the first-half before Iponga’s Richard Mwakyelu and Walusungu Gondwe scored in quick succession in the second-half.
Iponga’s coach, Edwin Kaonga, expressed satisfaction on the progression of his team while Songwe’s Assistant Coach, Kitwel Cheyo, admitted defeat stressing they will miss the competitiveness of the tournament whilst hailing the sponsors.
Taniel Mwakaghe, General Secretary for the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) for Karonga District, said the cup is helping unearth talent – thanks to the sponsors, FDH.
Iponga, a SIMSO Innobuild Premeir League-based outfit, has qualified for the third time to the national round of the FDH Bank Cup.
