Players in the water and Sanitation sector have underscored the need for an independent regulator in the sector if Malawi is to achieve 2030 sustainable development goals and the MW2063 development agenda.
Speaking at the ongoing 3rd Africa Water Supply and Sanitation Regulators Conference, Executive Director for Water and Sanitation Network (WESNET), Willies Mwandira, said in the current set up government is both a service provider and regulator which he said is an anomaly.
Mwandira noted that for sanity to prevail and for proper direction in the sector there is a need for a stand alone regulator as is the practice in other African countries.
Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia, said the government is doing background work that will lead to the establishment of an independent regulator.
