President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has hailed NBS Bank for committing K155 million towards this year’s Presidential Charity Golf Tournament.
Speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during the official unveiling of NBS Bank as Diamond Sponsor for this year’s tournament, President Chakwera expressed gratitude to the bank for the contribution, calling it “a gesture of hope.”
He emphasised the importance of such partnerships in addressing critical national issues, including providing access to higher education for underprivileged students and supporting communities affected by Cyclone Freddy.
“This partnership demonstrates the power of solidarity and patriotism, showing that together we can rebuild lives and strengthen our communities,” said Dr Chakwera.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer of NBS Bank, Temwani Simwaka, said the move is an alignment between the bank’s values and the causes supported through the golf tournament.
“Our partnership with the tournament is a natural extension of our work in uplifting vulnerable communities and supporting education in Malawi,” said Simwaka.
Simwaka also highlighted the bank’s role in refurbishing Limbe Country Club, the venue for this year’s tournament.
Chairperson of the Presidential Charity Golf Tournament’s Organising Committee, Gift Kawamba, confirmed that preparations for the event were nearing completion. He added that over 200 golfers are expected to participate this year, compared to last year’s 180.
“We’ve expanded the event to two days to accommodate the increasing interest, and we believe Country Club Limbe is well-equipped to host this significant tournament,” said Kawamba.
The charity golf tournament, now in its third year, has become a major fundraising initiative and last year, the tournament raised K411 million. This year, the target is set at K600 million.
Funds raised will go towards supporting public university students and rebuilding communities impacted by natural disasters.
