Chief Executive Officer of National Product Magazine, Arthur Chinyamula, has called for greater collaboration between agriculture, manufacturing, finance, and transport sectors to improve Malawi’s export performance and forex earnings.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming National Product Magazine Awards scheduled for Saturday 21 June 2025, Chinyamula said the event has attracted confirmation from companies in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique across eight categories. These include agriculture, transport, manufacturing, finance, and SMEs.
“The awards are not just about celebrating excellence but about spotlighting industries driving Malawi’s economy forward. If we want to strengthen our foreign exchange reserves, we must intensify efforts in promoting exports and local manufacturing,” Chinyamula said.
He observed that although Malawi’s GDP is largely dependent on agriculture and manufacturing, many industries still rely heavily on imported raw materials. He called for deliberate investment in local agriculture to supply industries with home-grown raw materials.
“We want to reduce import dependence and empower farmers through private sector support. High-quality yields will ensure a sustainable supply of raw materials locally,” he said.
Chinyamula stressed the importance of reliable regional transport infrastructure, particularly with neighbouring Mozambique, for efficient cross-border trade. He also lauded financial institutions that are easing the process for industries to access export financing.
The awards ceremony aims to honour entities transforming Malawi’s economic outlook while encouraging strategic partnerships to boost competitiveness in the SADC region.
